Low to bright light; avoid scorching hot sun.
Let the mix dry fully, then water. Much less in winter.
Average home is perfect.
15–30°C (avoid frost/cold windowsills).
TRF Semi‑Succulent Mix or Cactus & Arid Succulent Mix.
Origins & natural habitat
Dracaena trifasciata, still widely known by its former name Sansevieria trifasciata, is native to tropical Africa and is adapted to seasonally dry conditions.
Their thick leaves store water, and their roots prefer plenty of oxygen and a substrate that dries quickly. This is why snake plants excel in indoor life: they tolerate missed waterings and lower light, but they dislike cold, wet roots. Treating them like a semi‑succulent is the fastest route to long-term success.
Recreating the environment at home
Prioritise drainage. Give bright light if possible, but it will tolerate medium/low light with slower growth. Water sparingly and keep it warm—cold + wet is the main cause of failure.
Common pests & what to do
Common pests: Scale, Fungus gnats, Spider mites, Aphids, Mealybugs.
Scale: Isolate the plant and gently remove visible insects without damaging the stems or leaves. If further treatment is needed, use a UK-authorised product labelled for the pest and plant, following its instructions exactly.
Fungus gnats: Avoid keeping the growing medium continuously wet. Yellow sticky traps can reduce and monitor adults, while an appropriate biological control can target the developing stages in the growing medium.
Spider mites: Isolate the plant and rinse the foliage, especially the undersides. Consider a suitable biological control or a UK-authorised product labelled for the pest and plant, following its instructions exactly.
Aphids: Isolate the plant, rinse off visible insects and remove badly affected growth where appropriate. Consider a suitable biological control or UK-authorised product, following its label.
Mealybugs: Isolate the plant and remove visible insects carefully with a damp cotton bud. For further treatment, use a suitable biological control or UK-authorised product exactly as directed on its label.
Common problems & how to respond
Mushy base / collapsing leaves: Overwatering—remove from pot, trim to firm tissue, and repot into a very gritty mix. Recovery is variable; if the crown is mushy, survival is low.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering—water thoroughly, then allow to dry again.
Slow growth: Normal; increase light to speed it up.
Leaf scarring: Physical damage—cosmetic only.
Substrate preferences
Prefers a fast‑draining, airy mix that dries out between waterings. For soil setups, **TRF Semi‑Succulent Mix** is ideal — gritty structure + balanced organics to keep roots healthy. Some growers find semi‑hydro (Pon/LECA) even easier for consistency at home; if you try it, keep nutrients light and don’t leave the reservoir stagnant.
